Since today until the next August 7th, one of the most important and colorful fairs in the country will be celebrated in Medellín "La Feria de las Flores" (Flowers Festival).

Flowers Festival is an event that take place every year in the second largest city in Colombia: Medellín. There are held a series of events that honor the city which is known as "The City of Eternal Spring" in Colombia.

This celebration originated in 1957, commemorate the great color and variety of flowers produced in the area. Initially it was a flower show in the atrium of the Metropolitan Cathedral which was enriched with other activities among which stands out the silleteros parade.

The silleteros are people who carry a large striking floral motif on their back. Its size can reach 5 meters in length and 70 kilograms in weight. The system began as a medium to carry people but then it was used to carry flowers in a practical and secure way. When Arturo Uribe Arango founded the festival, he considered silleteros could be more than a purely practical farming activity and invite some to be part of a parade, in which they could show their production and entertain people at the same time.

Currently silleteros are considered a symbol of the culture of Antioquia and are noted for their appealing designs, which over the years have become increasingly ambitious.

In addition to the parade, various cultural and entertainment activities are carried out, and make Medellín an excellent destination to visit next week. Let's check out the program.
