The birdwatching activity has accelerated in recent years in Colombia, turning Manizales and its sorroundings in one of the top places for birdwatching in America.

Only in the department of Caldas (Manizales is its Capital City) has 950 species of birds, 73 more than Costa Rica, the pioneer country in the birdwatching activity.

The birdwatching activity has 100 million fans around the world and has produced profits close to US$30,000 dollars annually.


Foreigners get to watch the nearly 1,900 species of birds in the country. Caldas and Chocó departments are departments visited for this activity.

Colombia is becoming a powerhouse of bird watching.

According to the 'Guide to the Birds of Colombia', published by the Proaves Foundation, Colombia has 1879 species of the nearly 10,500 that exist in the world.

The Birdwatching National Network of Colombia organizes tours in the reserve near Rio Blanco Manizales. Something that "birdwatchers" have understood, that is why they look for variety of climatic zones which facilitates the existence of a greater number of species.
